Dr Ben Houston, Senior Lecturer, Newcastle University and Charlene Foggie-Barnett, curator and passionate promoter of the ‘Teenie’ Harris archive held by the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh introduce an audience at the Great North Museum: Hancock, to the ‘Not as it is written’ exhibition and app. Ben, who was the lead researcher/curator on the project, worked with us to create the app to accompany the exhibition.
Through the words of African Americans who were there, and photos taken by ‘Teenie’ at the time ‘Not as it is written‘ gives us a unique insight into race relations and civil rights in Pittsburgh during the 1950-70s. In addition to presenting an amazing collection of powerful images that have been paired with intimate oral histories the app also invites users to add their photography contributions to the exhibition collection.
The exhibition and app are part of Freedom City 2017 – a city wide programme across Newcastle marking the 50th anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. receiving an honorary degree from Newcastle University.
